Punjabi-first social software built around Shahmukhi, not bolted onto it.
Baithak is a social media product for the Punjabi-speaking community, designed specifically to preserve and promote the Shahmukhi script.
Problem
Most social products treat language and script as generic input. Baithak needed to do the opposite: make Shahmukhi the center of the experience and protect that identity in profiles, posts, and community behavior.
Technical Challenges
- Shahmukhi validation: I helped implement regex-based validation so usernames, names, and bios stay in the target script instead of drifting into English or mixed-script content.
- Input experience: The Android keyboard service was built specifically for Shahmukhi entry so typing felt native instead of hacked together.
- Privacy and safety: Supabase-backed rules, reporting, blocking, and account flows had to support a small but real community platform safely.
- Reusable product UI: The app uses a custom theme system, dark mode support, and reusable components so the product can keep growing without becoming inconsistent.
Stack and Architecture
React Native with TypeScript on the frontend, Supabase for auth, database, and storage, Vazirmatn for strong script rendering, and i18next for Punjabi-first localization.
What’s Next
The next steps are deeper community tooling, stronger discovery, and continued refinement of the language-first product rules that make Baithak unique.
